Contrast you can believe in

The New York Sun publishes the speech Sarah Palin never got to give. It appears the Obama campaign thought it was more important to play politics than display a unified front against Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

He must be stopped.

The world must awake to the threat this man poses to all of us. Ahmadinejad denies that the Holocaust ever took place. He dreams of being an agent in a "Final Solution" — the elimination of the Jewish people. He has called Israel a "stinking corpse" that is "on its way to annihilation." Such talk cannot be dismissed as the ravings of a madman — not when Iran just this summer tested long-range Shahab-3 missiles capable of striking Tel Aviv, not when the Iranian nuclear program is nearing completion, and not when Iran sponsors terrorists that threaten and kill innocent people around the world...

Senator McCain has made a solemn commitment that I strongly endorse: Never again will we risk another Holocaust. And this is not a wish, a request, or a plea to Israel's enemies. This is a promise that the United States and Israel will honor, against any enemy who cares to test us. It is John McCain's promise and it is my promise.

And then there's this:

Here’s a swift test. Be honest. What sentence can you quote from his convention speech in Denver? I thought so. All right, what about his big rally speech in Berlin? Just as I guessed. OK, help me out: Surely you can manage to cite a line or two from his imperishable address on race (compared by some liberal academics to Gettysburg itself) in Philadelphia? No, not the line about his white grandmother. Some other line. Oh, dear. Now do you see what I mean?

That was Christopher Hitchens. Read it all ("Why is Obama so vapid, hesitant, and gutless?").

Now consider: Palin's memorable quotes already outshine any of the rhetorical flourishes and breathless pontificating of Obama's jaunts to Berlin and Denver.

Palin Smears: Orchestrated by Obama's Campaign?

Dr. Rusty Shackleford at The Jawa Report has the must-read story of the week. It would appear that several federal election laws have been broken and that none other than David Axelrod appears to be behind an "astroturf" campaign against Sarah Palin. Read the whole thing (Dan Riehl has the executive summary).

Extensive research was conducted by the Jawa Report to determine the source of smears directed toward Republican Vice Presidential candidate Sarah Palin. Those smears included false allegations that she belonged to a secessionist political party and that she has radical anti-American views.

Our research suggests that a subdivision of one of the largest public relations firms in the world most likely started and promulgated rumors about Sarah Palin that were known to be false. These rumors were spread in a surreptitious manner to avoid exposure.

[Ed: also known as "Astroturfing"]

It is also likely that the PR firm was paid by outside sources to run the smear campaign. While not conclusive, evidence suggests a link to the Barack Obama campaign. Namely:

* Evidence suggests that a YouTube video with false claims about Palin was uploaded and promoted by members of a professional PR firm.

* The family that runs the PR firm has extensive ties to the Democratic Party, the netroots, and are staunch Obama supporters.

* Evidence suggests that the firm engaged in a concerted effort to distribute the video in such a way that it would appear to have gone viral on its own. Yet this effort took place on company time.

* Evidence suggests that these distribution efforts included actions by at least one employee of the firm who is unconnected with the family running the company.

* The voice-over artist used in this supposedly amateur video is a professional.

* This same voice-over artist has worked extensively with David Axelrod's firm, which has a history of engaging in phony grassroots efforts, otherwise known as "astroturfing."

* David Axelrod is Barack Obama's chief media strategist.

* The same voice-over artist has worked directly for the Barack Obama campaign.

Using the same research tactics they've employed in tracking terrorist supporters online, the Jawa team deconstructed the professionally organized campaign of lies aimed at destroying Sarah Palin's candidacy.

A related note: on 9/2, I noted that the same Palin slime chain mail had been posted in hundreds of forums simultaneously. It was an obviously orchestrated campaign.

Gosh, I wonder who could've been behind that sort of thing? Could it have been hopey, changey-type folks?

The creaking, decrepit hypocrisy of the mainstream media

Just when you think the mainstream media's agenda couldn't be more obvious...

Consider 1984, when the New York Times endorsed the candidacy of Geraldine Ferraro.

On occasion, Americans find it necessary to rationalize this rough-and-ready process. What a splendid system, we say to ourselves, that takes little-known men, tests them in high office and permits them to grow into statesmen. This rationale may even be right, but then let it also be fair.

Why shouldn’t a little-known woman have the same opportunity to grow? We may even be gradually elevating our standards for choosing Vice Presidential candidates. But that should be done fairly, also. Meanwhile, the indispensable credential for a Woman Who is the same as for a Man Who - one who helps the ticket.

Or consider 2006, when Brian Gibson lobbed underhand softballs at the least experienced presidential candidate in history, one Barack H. Obama. Compare and contrast:

How does it feel to break a glass ceiling?
How does it feel to “win”?
How does your family feel about your “winning” breaking a glass ceiling?
Who will be your VP?
Should you choose Hillary Clinton as VP?

The truth is that Sarah Palin has been the object of the most vicious and concerted smear campaign in modern American history. But that fact doesn't cause the media (or Howard Kurtz) to get mad.

It's not too hard to diagnose why, as Kurtz correctly says, "the media are getting mad." They're getting mad because their candidate is losing...

They've spent years building him up and covering for his mistakes and shortcomings, and he is such a stiff that he can't coast across the finish line. I'd be mad too, I guess, but I think I'd have the decency not to take it out on Sarah Palin.

Decency and the mainstream media? An oxymoron, as The New York Times is wont to repeatedly prove. Perhaps Pinch can compromise another perfectly legal classified national security program before Bush leaves office.

Update: Deroy Murdock notes how the Obama campaign compensates its female staffers versus males ("How Team Obama Pays Women: Pay equity for thee, but not for me").

Thus, Obama’s average male employee earned $54,397... Obama’s 30 female employees [earn] $45,152, on average.

McCain’s... male staffers [average] $53,936... His... female employees averaged $55,878.

Update II: P. J. Gladnick at Newsbusters examined the ABC transcript and discovered some outrageous editing. And that's no overstatement. Here's just one example (the bolded text was removed from the broadcast by ABC).

GIBSON: Have you ever met a foreign head of state?
PALIN: There in the state of Alaska, our international trade activities bring in many leaders of other countries.
GIBSON: And all governors deal with trade delegations.
PALIN: Right.
GIBSON: Who act at the behest of their governments.
PALIN: Right, right.
GIBSON: I’m talking about somebody who’s a head of state, who can negotiate for that country. Ever met one?

PALIN: I have not and I think if you go back in history and if you ask that question of many vice presidents, they may have the same answer that I just gave you. But, Charlie, again, we’ve got to remember what the desire is in this nation at this time. It is for no more politics as usual and somebody’s big, fat resume maybe that shows decades and decades in that Washington establishment, where, yes, they’ve had opportunities to meet heads of state … these last couple of weeks … it has been overwhelming to me that confirmation of the message that Americans are getting sick and tired of that self-dealing and kind of that closed door, good old boy network that has been the Washington elite.

Shocker: Newsweek helps to debunk the Palin sleazemongers

To it credit, Newsweek has republished Factcheck.org's analysis of the many Palin rumors transiting the series of tubes that make up the Internets.

We've been flooded for the past few days with queries about dubious Internet postings and mass e-mail messages making claims about McCain's running mate, Gov. Palin. We find that many are completely false, or misleading.

Palin did not cut funding for special needs education in Alaska by 62 percent. She didn't cut it at all. In fact, she tripled per-pupil funding over just three years.

She did not demand that books be banned from the Wasilla library. Some of the books on a widely circulated list were not even in print at the time. The librarian has said Palin asked a "What if?" question, but the librarian continued in her job through most of Palin's first term.

She was never a member of the Alaskan Independence Party, a group that wants Alaskans to vote on whether they wish to secede from the United States. She's been registered as a Republican since May 1982.

Palin never endorsed or supported Pat Buchanan for president. She once wore a Buchanan button as a "courtesy" when he visited Wasilla, but shortly afterward she was appointed to co-chair of the campaign of Steve Forbes in the state.

Palin has not pushed for teaching creationism in Alaska's schools. She has said that students should be allowed to "debate both sides" of the evolution question, but she also said creationism "doesn't have to be part of the curriculum."

Gee, I wonder who could've spread all of this bogus filth? I wonder if their campaign rhymes with Nobama?

1. Yes, she is Governor of Alaska. No, she’s not the Lieutenant Governor. No, she’s not currently Mayor of Wasilla. Yes, she was Mayor of Wasilla, some years ago.


2. Yes, there are people in Alaska who think she’s too liberal.


3. Yes, she did giggle when someone called Lyda Green a “bitch.” Yes, it was the same Lyda Green who tried to force a scheduling conflict that would make Palin miss her son’s high school graduation. Yes, this would also be the Lyda Green who complained no one had asked her about Palin during the vetting process.


4. Yes, she did push for and approve the Wasilla Sports Center. Yes, it did cost a lot of money. (People keep saying $20 million, that article says $14.5 million, but then they also added a $1.2 million dollar food service/kitchen piece. This year, since Palin was out of office as Mayor.) Yes, the city went into debt to do it (how did you buy your house, bunkie?) and raised the city sales tax from 2 percent to 2.5 percent to pay for it. Yes, the city is paying it off early.

The threat represented by Gov. Palin: actual change in Washington

Powerful senators gather on the floor including Ted Stevens, Illinois Senator Barack Obama (D-IL), Delaware Senator Joe Biden (D-DE) and Oklahoma Senator Tom Coburn (R-OK).

Tom Coburn adds a Senate Appropriations amendment that would remove funds for Stevens' $223 million "Bridge to Nowhere." Coburn wants to send the money to New Orleans, in order to rebuild the Interstate 10 bridge, which was badly damaged by Hurricane Katrina.

An angry Stevens threatens to resign if he doesn't get his way.

Senator John McCain, an opponent of Stevens and the Bridge to Nowhere, is not in the Senate the day Coburn raises his amendment. But McCain is on record as opposing the construction of the Alaskan bridge. McCain wants to help the victims of Katrina by rebuilding the I-10 bridge.

And his relationship with Stevens on the subject of earmarks has also been fiery.

Most of the Senate is intimidated by the power of Stevens, who is the Appropriations Chairman, and the body votes 82-15 to proceed with Stevens' $223 earmark.

Senators Obama and Biden both vote with Stevens -- both vote for the Bridge to Nowhere.

Stevens ally, former Senate colleague and current Republican Governor Frank Murkowski is challenged in his re-election bid by a young Alaska mother, former mayor of a small town and ex-chairperson of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission.

That mother, Sarah Palin, had resigned as chair over a "lack of ethics" by another commission member and state GOP chairman. She filed formal complaints against both the GOP chair and the state's attorney general. Both men are forced to resign.

Disgusted over the endemic corruption, Palin challenges Stevens' friend Murkowski and wins the governorship.

Wingin' it: Palin's teleprompter pulled a Howard Dean

Today we discover that Sarah Palin's teleprompter screeched to a halt during her RNC acceptance speech and she was forced to wing it.

Here is word from Redstate.com that McCain Campaign sources say that during Sarah Palin’s speech last night the teleprompter stopped working properly, leaving her to speak without its help! Drudge is linking to the Redstate article...

She did not miss a beat! So much for the, “She can read a telemprompter well” attack! Priceless!

On the other hand if it were Obama in that situation losing touch with his oh so necessary teleprompter.

“Buhdeeba-buhdeeba-duh-that’s all, folks.

For instance… Let’s count the ‘uh’s’ in this quote.

BO: Well, you know, my understanding is that, uh, Governor Palin’s town of Wasilly [sic] has, uh, 50 employees, uh, uh, we’ve got 2500, uh, in this campaign. I think their budget is maybe $12 million a year. Uh, uh, we have a budget of about three times that just for the month. Uh, so I think that, uh, our ability to manage large systems, uh, and to, uh, execute, uh, I think has been made clear over the last couple of years. Uh, and certainly, in terms of, uh, the legislation that I’ve passed just dealing with this issue post-Katrina, uh, of how we handle emergency management. I had the privilege of living most of my life in a small town. I was just your average hockey mom, and signed up for the PTA because I wanted to make my kids’ public education better. When I ran for city council, I didn’t need focus groups and voter profiles because I knew those voters, and knew their families, too. Before I became governor of the great state of Alaska, I was mayor of my hometown. And since our opponents in this presidential election seem to look down on that experience, let me explain to them what the job involves.

I guess a small-town mayor is sort of like a ‘community organizer,’ except that you have actual responsibilities.

Jan Wenner's US Magazine launches another attack on Palin

Wenner, publisher of the well-nigh unreadable Rolling Stone Magazine and the questionable Men's Journal (If you like oiled-up dudes' bodies, Men's Journal could be for you, not that there's anything wrong with that), offers another highbrow publication in the form of US Magazine.

Its current cover story on Sara Palin is entitled Babies, Lies and Scandal and could be one of the most hilariously one-sided "stories" of all time. If it's not a satirical look at the mainstream media, it very well could be.

While the title of the story mentions "lies", there are no lies described within the story.

When the story mentions Palin's husband's DWI (driving-while-under-influence) charge, it somehow neglects to mention that it occurred in 1986. Otherwise known as the era in which Barack Obama admitted smoking weed and doing "a little blow."

The story was so pathetic that its author, Bradley Jacobs, stumbled badly when interviewed on Fox News. Megan Kelly shredded Jacobs, who was reduced to a quivering and stuttering invertebrate.

Even the story's URI (slug) has a spin: sarah-palin-very-difficult-to-work-with.

Continuing with its attack today, the "magazine" has a poll that asks "Will Sara Palin's daughter's pregnancy affect your vote?"

The American people have spoken. At the present, 91% of Americans are answering "No".

With that, Wenner, I recommend you pour yourself a big, tall glass of Shut-Up Juice.

The lovely Candy forwarded me the following chain letter, purported to have been written by a "Jackie S." regarding the qualifications of Palin.

Interestingly, it was also posted in hundreds of forums in a matter of a few hours:

• ...many more.

Let's fisk, shall we?

As an Alaskan, I am writing to give all of you some information on Sarah Palin, Senator McCain's choice for VP. As an Alaska voter, I know more than most of you about her and, frankly, I am horrified that he picked her.

The most accurate description of her is red neck.

A "red neck"? Case closed. Disqualified.

Her husband works in the oil fields of Prudhoe Bay and races snow mobiles.

Double secret disqualified!

She is a life time member of the NRA and has worked tirelessly to allow indiscriminate hunting of wildlife in Alaska, particularly wolves and bears. She has spent millions of Alaska state dollars on aerial hunting of these predators from helicopters and airplanes, dollars that should have been spent, for example, on Alaska's failing school system.

Truth: The Alaskan Wolf Control Project is not a "hunt": "Wolves and bears are very effective and efficient predators on caribou, moose, deer and other wildlife. In most of Alaska, humans also rely on the same species for food. In Alaska's Interior, predators kill more than 80 percent of the moose and caribou that die during an average year... Predation is an important part of the ecosystem, and all ADF&G wolf management programs, including control programs, are designed to sustain wolf populations in the future." In other words, the program part of the Wildlife Conservation Program intended to balance the caribou population with wolves, for example.

We have the lowest rate of high school graduation in the country.

Truth: According to the Manhattan Institute's most recent study, Alaska's High School graduation rate of 67% is approximately that of the nation's average and surpasses that of Alabama, Arizona, DC, Florida, Georgia, Nevada, New Mexico, North Carolina, Oregon, South Carolina and Texas.

Not all of you may think aerial predator hunting is so bad, but how anyone (other than Alaska wolf-haters, of which there are many, most without teeth), could think this use of funds is appropriate is beyond me. If you want to know more about the aerial hunting travesty, let me know and I will send some links to informative web sites.

Truth: Actually including the "links to informative web sites"? Too technically daunting, I suppose. In reality, aerial predator control in Alaska preserves other species and has existed for decades (see: Current: Aerial Predator Control and Predator control, politics, and wildlife conservation in Alaska).

She has been a strong supporter of increased use of fossil fuels, yet the McCain campaign has the nerve to say she has 'green' policies.

Truth: Zogby reports that 74% of Americans favor offshore oil drilling and 59% support drilling in ANWR. While the pursuit of green technologies is admirable, until wind- and solar-powered cars, trains and trucks are commonplace, our economy hinges on fossil fuels.

The only thing green about Sarah Palin is her lack of experience.

Truth: Palin has significantly more executive experience than Barack Obama. She managed an immense energy commission, stopped "The Bridge to Nowhere", and went after corruption in both parties. Obama, on the other hand, omitted his only management experience from his official biography.

...Prior to her one year as governor of Alaska, she was mayor of Wasilla, a small red neck town outside Anchorage.

"Red neck"! "Red neck"! "Red neck"!

The average maximum education level of parents of junior high school kids in Wasilla is 10th grade.

Truth: It took about 30 seconds to debunk this assertion. The 2008 Wasilla education survey has the percentage of high school graduates surpassing both Alaskan and U.S. averages. As do those possessing Collegiate Associate Degrees.

Unfortunately, I have to go to Wasilla every week to get groceries and other supplies, so I have continual contact with the people who put Palin in office in the first place.

Here's an astute reporter that has to trek into Wasilla for "supplies" and thinks they are out of touch!

I know what I'm talking about.

Heh!

These people don't have a concept of the world around them or of the serious issues facing the US...

Plus, they're "red necks"!

If you supported Hillary, regardless of what you think the media and the democratic party may have done to undermine her campaign, the person to support now is Obama, not Sarah Palin.

Gee, I wonder who could have originated this chain mail and posted it in hundreds of forums across the Internet in a matter of hours?

I know this is a lengthy and emotional email, but the stakes are high. I thought it might help for all of you, regardless of political affiliation, to know something about Palin from someone who has to live with her administration in Alaska on a daily basis.

Well, we know something about those who oppose Palin. They're elitists and male chauvinists who can't give a lick of credit to a Governor with an 80% approval rating, an excellent record of pursuing corruption, and who visited Iraq as many times as Barack Obama... while raising five kids!

Maybe the same guys who orchestrated this email also ran Hillary out of the Democratic race?

That diary got 'rec'd' -- voted as one of the 'Best Of' on DailyKos. The diary is uncited, breathless, and spins a story that's totally far-fetched. Without going through the whole hot mess point by point, I'll mention that no doctors, nurses, hospital workers or other patients have come forward to say anything was amiss. Plus, there's this picture.

The irony for me, of course, is that despite making over fifty short political videos with a clear progressive point of view, I was banned on DailyKos for saying that it seemed reasonable that John Edwards was seen at the Beverly Hilton late at night.

Why does the Kos inevitably lead to 108-degree flu-symptom crazy? One might simply ask why a bear craps in the woods. Or why Michael Moore always buys two first-class seats for air travel.
